Power Racks FAQs

What does a power rack do?

A power rack (also sometimes called a power cage, squat cage, or power lift rack) is a piece of weight training equipment that essentially functions as a spotter for weightlifting. Unlike a smith machine, a power rack allows you to lift weights without the barbell locked into a track that guides its movement.

The power rack consists of a metal frame with adjustable bar hooks and safety pins, allowing you to customise a safe and stable lifting environment to your liking.

What are the advantages of a power rack?

A key benefit is safety. The power rack will stop a barbell if you accidentally drop it, so it won’t hit the floor. A lot of people also like using power racks for other exercises, like pull-ups or chin ups. They’re also great for storage, as many feature weight plate storage.

You may also be interested in a half rack, which is smaller (see squat racks for more details). These function in much the same way, but power racks do have more features. If you have the space for a full power rack, you’ll benefit from the additional safety measures that they can provide.

How do you use a power rack safely?

While the power rack does offer some assistance for those looking to lift weights in their home gym alone, it’s ideal to always be able to use a spotter when lifting heavy weights if you can.

You should also always adjust the safety pins and j hooks to the right heights for you. If you're not sure how to set up a power rack to suit your size, you can always reach out to us for assistance or support.
