Collection: Boxing Headgear

Part of the fun and intensity of boxing is that the target is (usually) the head – it’s why the sweet science is such an adrenaline rush, and can prove so addictive for so many gym goers. But the reality of being hit in the head can be a little less enticing than the prospect, so it’s important to protect yourself with boxing headgear.

Boxing headgear takes the form of a specifically designed helmet that covers most of the head, whether in a full face or open face style. The best boxing headgear provides all the protection you need without impeding your view.

Boxing headgear FAQs

Do you need to wear boxing headgear?

While professional boxers don’t wear headgear, amateur and Olympic boxers always do, so anyone who isn’t a pro should definitely protect their head. It’s important to note that while headgear is effective at protecting against cuts, splits and swelling, it only provides limited protection against concussion.

Is headgear compulsory in boxing?

Headgear was compulsory in Olympic boxing for 30 years, up until the Rio Olympics, where it was removed in the men’s division for the reasons mentioned in the FAQ above. While headgear may not be compulsory in amateur gym settings, it is most certainly recommended, and some gyms and trainers will have their own policies around it. It is particularly effective protective equipment for sparring.

Does headgear prevent knockouts?

It’s important to note that boxing headgear doesn’t prevent knock-outs. It is effective at preventing cuts and bruises, and it can deaden the light-to-medium punches received during sparring and amateur bouts, but a forceful punch can still cause damage and concussion, even if the recipient is wearing padded headgear.

Should I buy headgear?

Yes, if you box, or if you’re considering taking up boxing, you should definitely invest in headgear. By absorbing and dispersing forceful blows aimed at your most important organ, it gives you extra protection exactly where you need it, particularly during sparring. Quality headgear is comfortable to wear and doesn’t obstruct your vision. What’s more, many gyms and trainers won’t let you spar without it.
