Glute Machines FAQs

What is the most effective glute workout?

The most effective glute workout will change depending on what your goals are, whether enhancing the strength, size, tone or performance of the muscles. While purpose-built machines are particularly effective at working the glutes, non-machine exercises like hip thrusts, squats, deadlifts, lateral band walks and glute bridges can also help you reach your glute goals.

Does the glute machine really work?

Yes, leg and glute machines are very effective at working these major muscle groups. The glutes are amongst the strongest muscles in the body, so the ability to isolate the muscles and add weight to your workout can help you to develop a level of glute strength and size that simply isn’t possible through bodyweight exercise.

What is the difference between a hip thrust and a glute machine?

Hip thrust machines and glute machines are used differently and target muscles differently. Hip thrust machines see you elevate your upper back on a bench and place a barbell across your hips, which you lift through your heels – an exercise which targets both the glutes and the stabilising muscles that surround them. A glute machine, meanwhile, is a fixed-resistance machine that isolates the glutes, by getting you to push against a weighted pad with your legs.

Do squats work glutes?

Squats are perhaps the most well-known and widely used exercise for engaging glutes. This exercise works all your glute muscles at once, and is an effective way to build glute size and strength. No equipment is needed, although you can use a barbell or dumbbells to increase the intensity of the workout beyond the limits of your bodyweight.
